Consultation has concluded
The G2G Rail Trail Inc., with support from Huron County, will be restoring a tunnel under County Road 25, West of Blyth to improve safety and accessibility of the trail system. The G2G Rail Trail is 132 km of linear, multi-use green space running from Guelph to Goderich. The Blyth Tunnel Project is fully funded by G2G Rail Trail Inc.
Previously there was a tunnel at this location which allowed rail traffic to pass under County Road 25. As the tunnel was no longer needed for rail traffic and due to deterioration of the aging structure, it was decommissioned and filled in.
The tunnel restoration project was awarded to Lavis Contracting Co. Limited at the April 17, 2024 County Council Meeting. The Contractor is anticipating to mobilize to site and start construction on May 21, 2024, with the roadway and G2G Rail Trail being fully reopened at this location by no later than July 1, 2024. The road closure will be limited to 26 consecutive calendar days.
During construction County Road 25 will be closed to through traffic between Currie Line and Cemetery Line. Access to properties between Currie Line and Cemetery Line will be maintained, but no traffic will be able to pass the trail tunnel locations during construction. The signed detour route will use County Road 4 (London Road) south of Blyth, to County Road 15 (Londesboro Road), to County Road 8 (Base Line), back to County Road 25 (Blyth Road) at Auburn.
Similarly, the G2G Rail Trail will be closed to trail users at the County Road 25 location to through pedestrian traffic for the duration of construction. An alternative route will be provided for trail users during construction.
